Weald allotment site is one of the best kept secrets in Hove. Nearly 400 allotments nestle between Weald and Nevill Avenues, and since 1916, allotment-holders have grown fruit, flowers and veg on the Weald site.
Now Weald is opening to the public. Between 10:00 and 16:00 on 26 September, visitors will be able to make their way around the site, and it’s not just allotments that will be on show.
Some of Weald’s sheds will be ‘open’ – selling plants, cakes or produce, holding a miniature art exhibition, offering bric-a-brac or clothing for sale or just a place where the allotment holder is on hand to talking about growing fruit and veg and share decades of experience about what grows best in the locality and how to deal with common horticultural problems.
Two guided tours of the site will take place at 13:00 and 15:00, otherwise visitors will be given a map of the site, showing where Open Sheds are taking place.
Jam and chutney tasting and recipe swap at the Brighton & Hove Organic Gardening Group (Bhogg) plot from 12-4. Bring along a sample of your home made chutney or jam with a copy of the recipe and Bhogg will provide the rest for a tasty tasting session. All welcome and you don't have to bring any preserves !
The Weald shop will also be available: it’s an association shop, run by and for its members (you have to pay a £1 annual membership to join) but then you can benefit from substantial discounts of up to 35% on seeds, tools and other gardening items.
