'Grow It' Competition 2011

phoenix-w300-h300

The 'Grow It' competition, organised by Harvest Brighton & Hove and the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival, encouraged businesses of all kinds to grow edible plants in their shops, windows and gardens. Growing food on site is a great way for businesses to attract new customers, show their support for local food and food growing, and maybe even save a few pennies in the process!

Competition winners for 2011 were the Phoenix Community Centre near the Level for their 'secret garden' in an alley behind the centre. Other finalists were: NHR Organic Oils, Little Earthworms Nursery and Temptation Cafe, and an honourable mention for the Dover Castle for their Hanover Urban Salad pilot project.

The 2011 competition was launched at Temptation Cafe (joint winner in 2010 with Little Earthworms Nursery).

Winners 2010

In 2010, we saw loads of creative and recycled containers and veg growing in unusual urban spaces around the city, inspiring others to give it a ‘grow’! Businesses of all types joined in – from bars growing mint for cocktails, to pubs, cafes and restaurants growing herbs or salads to city offices trying out windowboxes or roofgardens. The winners were Little Earthworms Nursery and Temptation Cafe. They were awarded their prizes at our Local Food Week Picnic in Preston Park during the Food Festival in September.
